Williams’ late strike ensures Rotherfield make cup progress

ROTHERFIELD UNITED U18s started their Oxfordshire Joe Roughton U18 Youth Cup campaign with a 3-2 home win against HORSPATH U18s.

Rotherfield had the better of the early play but both teams found more rhythm and an open game developed. Ten minutes before half-time a handball on the edge of the area gave the visitors a free kick which was curled round the edge of the Rotherfield wall to put Horspath ahead.

Rotherfield kept pushing forward but outnumbered at the back they were hit on the counter and only a fine save from Danny Hodder in the Rotherfield goal stopped the hosts going two down.

In the last play of the half Rotherfield won a corner from which Markland Tidswell was able to pounce on a half clearance to level the score.

The second half proved just as close with Tidswell rattling the crossbar from 25 yards and Horspath grazing the Rotherfield post twice in a half of end-to-end football.
