Wilson dusts himself off to complete hat-trick from penalty spot

WATLINGTON’S euphoria from the recent quarter-final win quickly vanished with the concession of three early goals on a heavy pitch at Broughton and North Newington in their Division 1 Oxfordshire Senior League match on Saturday.

A depleted Watlington side took to the field at Broughton and were hit with three early blows to put the result beyond doubt before they had even settled into the game.

Keeper James Conn was beaten by a volley from the edge of the area for the first, before a cross from the right was deflected just inside the near post off a defender to double the hosts’ advantage. There was fortune about Broughton’s third goal when a cross from the right sailed over everyone and landed just inside the far post to make it 3-0. A stunned Watlington eventually got themselves back into the game with some possession and half-chances before the break, but were unable to find a breakthrough.

The visitors’ effort was cranked up in the second half but eventually they were undone at the other end after a defensive error was punished and Broughton notched their fourth goal to complete an ultimately comfortable victory.
