Second half strike causes Town cup final heartache

WATLINGTON TOWN missed out on claiming their first major trophy for more than a decade as they went down narrowly to Thame United’s Reserves from the Hellenic League at Kidlington on Thursday of last week in the Intermediate Cup final.

The only goal of the game came from a Thame corner midway through the second half, which was flicked on and buried into the far corner past keeper James Conn.

Thame had started the brighter of the two teams and Watlington’s keeper had to be alert to push out early United efforts on goal.

The centre-back pairing of Strong and Bridges did well to repel the early Thame pressure.

At the other end the speedy trio of Allan Stevenson, Johnny Pitts and Luke Yeulet threatened to unsettle their opponents as Town gradually gained a foothold in the game.
