Solid start despite perils of flying high

THE left-field facts and trivia help to spice up otherwise unremarkable games.

For instance, Reading’s record when they fly to games in the last five years read played 10, lost nine, drawn one, goals for two, goals against 18. Serious questions needed to be asked about the wisdom of travelling by plane to games, based on that statistic.

Despite the record, Reading opted to fly to Middlesbrough last weekend. They won the game 1-0, although the flight was so turbulent apparently one player shrieked in terror. They were shrieking with delight when Simon Cox brilliantly lobbed the keeper to seal the three points.

Seven points from the first five games of the season is a steady start to the Championship season. Take into account the injury toll and it is a good return.

Three seasons ago they won the Championship and had only accumulated four points at this stage. They are still in the League Cup, which is a novelty. They are normally dumped out of the competition in August. They travel to Derby in three weeks for the next round.
