AFC HENLEY HURRICANES U10s crashed to their first East Berks League defeat of the season as they went down 2-0 to BRACKNELL CAVALIERS U10s at Jubilee Park on Saturday.
Man-of-the-match Ben Horner pulled off a string of fine saves in the home goal to keep the Hurricanes in the match but it was not enough to earn them anything from the game.
The visitors started well as the Hurricanes were slow out of the blocks. Horner was called into action early on and pulled off some good blocks and clean handling to keep the Cavaliers at bay.
Captain Tom Bonser was also busy and defended well as Bracknell laid siege to the hosts’ goal although the Hurricanes got in for the quarter break on level terms.
Luca Thomson and Finnbar Scott defended tirelessly whilst also trying to get forward to give the Hurricanes a foothold in the game.
It was not long before the Cavaliers took the lead after a good passing move saw them score at the far post with Horner having no chance.
Going behind seemed to sting the Hurricanes into action as Tom Yeoman and Sam Winters strove to find the equaliser with some penetrating runs although a well marshalled Bracknell defence kept them out.
The hosts started the second half brightly. Olly Saunders let fly from 20 yards and saw his effort go wide whilst Tom Atkinson saw a clever effort saved by the keeper’s legs. Yeoman also saw a header go close from a well flighted Atkinson corner.
Joe Turner was a dynamic force driving down the right wing and through his quick feet he created a number of openings which the Hurricanes just could not capitalise on.
All the pressure was coming from the home team but it was the Cavaliers who scored a breakaway goal to wrap up the scoring.
