Late goal enough to keep Woodcote in pole position
A LATE Jake Dillon strike helped table-toppers Woodcote/Stoke Row snatch a 2-1 win at Marlow United in the John Dell
A LATE Jake Dillon strike helped table-toppers Woodcote/Stoke Row snatch a 2-1 win at Marlow United in the John Dell Senior Division on Saturday.
The opening exchanges proved cagey as the in-form sides cancelled each other out at Bisham Abbey. Woodcote began to take command as the first half progressed but were limited to a trio of Paul Knox efforts from the edge of the area, while the hosts struck the bar on the counterattack. Against the run of play Marlow took the lead two minutes into the second half when striker Adam Dickens grabbed his 36th goal of the campaign.
The goal arrived via the penalty spot after Woodcote captain Jim Hancock’s mistimed challenge was ruled to have taken place inside the area. Ryan Corbett struck from 10 yards out as he bagged his fourth goal in five games to level matters in the 77th minute.
Frank Dillon spurned a chance to help Woodcote take the lead when he fired wide with just the keeper to beat but his brother spared his blushes shortly after. Jake Dillon’s trickery saw him dribble past three Marlow defenders before he rifled a left-footed strike into the net to extend Row’s unbeaten run to 10 matches.
Woodcote/Stoke Row are now four points clear of third-place Marlow who have five games in hand.
