HENLEY TOWN’S double header with Thatcham Town away on Saturday and at home on Tuesday fell victim to yet more bad weather, writes John Bailey.
The referee called the game off 90 minutes before the start of Saturday’s scheduled match on a day that saw all the other fixtures in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 East meet with the same fate.
On Tuesday the Lilywhites’ home match was postponed in the morning due to the Triangle Ground still having huge puddles on the pitch.
A waterlogged pitch meant the Sunday team’s fixture with Purple Turtle was also called off.
The only Town side to play last week was the youth team, which made the long journey to Buckingham Athletic on the Thursday and lost 2-0.
Tomorrow (Saturday) the first team travel to Maidenhead United Reserves, kick-off 3pm. This is another game that was the subject of an earlier postponement.
Prior to Tuesday’s matches, Maidenhead stood sixth in the table with games in hand over every team above them, so they have every chance of finishing amongst the leaders.
When they won 8-2 on the Invesco Perpetual Triangle in November they looked close to being the best side Henley have played all season.
The Town’s next home game will at 6.30pm on Good Friday against Bracknell Town.
There are league fixtures for the Sunday and youth teams this week. The former entertain AFC Southfield, kick-off 10.30am and the youths’ game is on Thursday, away to Wantage Town Youth at 7.45pm.
lLast week’s game in the Henley Charity Cup was postponed. On Wednesday, Rotherfield United meet Winnersh Rangers in the same competition on the Town ground, kick-off 7.30pm.
