ROTHERFIELD UNITED U16s entered two teams — Rotherfield Raiders and Rotherfield Raptors — into the Woodley Saints tournament last weekend where they found themselves up against tough opposition that included Eldon Celtic, Abingdon United and Woodley Saints.
Both teams successfully negotiated their way through the group stages to set up quarter-final matches where Raiders came back from a goal behind to overcame Abingdon 3-1, and Raptors squeezed through on penalties.
Raptors then met Eldon Celtic in their semi-final and, following a hard-fought 0-0 draw, again held their nerve to win the penalty shootout.
Raiders entered their semi-final against Haddenham FC knowing that a win would make it an all Rotherfield final but lost out on penalties.
In a close final Williams had a last minute chance well saved by the Haddenham keeper taking the match into another penalty shootout.
Following misses by both teams Ollie Williams held his nerve to score his penalty to take the shootout into sudden death.
Haddenham missed their first effort leaving Markland Tidswell to fire home low to the keeper’s right to secure the cup for the Raptors.
l Rotherfield United will field a combined U17/U18 squad next season, playing Sunday afternoons. Any player interested in joining should email firstname.lastname@example.org for further details.
