Minister to open new football pitches

HOME Secretary Theresa May will officially open Wargrave’s new football pitches next month.

HOME Secretary Theresa May will officially open Wargrave’s new football pitches next month.

The Maidenhead MP, who is president of Wargrave Girls FC, will unveil a full-sized 11-a-side pitch and two smaller junior pitches at Kings Field on Saturday, September 7.

The pitches will be used by Wargrave Girls and the Wargrave Wolves, who will mark the opening with a coaches match, penalty shoot-out competition and open trial for new players.

There will be food and drink available for players and spectators throughout the day.

The two clubs raised £9,000 for the new pitches with activities including a talent show and beer festival after Wargrave Parish Council successfully applied to Wokingham Borough Council in 2011.

Due to their growing popularity, the teams had been forced to play most of their games away from home because the recreation ground wasn’t big enough.

Simon Robinson, who coaches both teams, said: “The teams would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to raise a significant sum of money to fund the rejuvenation of Kings Field and to the waste management company Biffa for its grant.

“The girls, boys, coaches and parents are all looking forward to coming home.”

Wargrave Girls currently have nine teams and more than 100 players from under nine to women’s level. The teams compete in the FA Berkshire County Girls’ League and Thames Valley Women’s League.

Wargrave Wolves joined the East Berks Youth Football League in 2010 with the help of Twyford Comets. They have seven teams with 80 boys from under sevens to under 11s.
