HENLEY TOWN struggled to recover from a three goal deficit against a lively Chalfont Wasps side in their Uhlsport Division 1 East clash at the Triangle on Saturday, writes Graham Harris.
Most of the first half was evenly matched with play confined to the central area of the pitch.
Chances were few and far between with Red Kites’ Mat Godwin heading wide and Sanchez Commack seeing his powerful shot sail over the bar.
The deadlock was broken just before half-time when a Henley defensive error allowed Wasps’ forward Andy Hiblen to capitalise with a left foot shot past keeper Ashley East.
Shortly after Sam Cripps was shown a yellow card for a foul on Ryan Sweales, while Wasps’ Paul Gilbert also received a booking after a two man tussle ensued.
The second half began with the arrival of two substitutes, Wasps’ James Ramsey for the injured Andy Hiblen and Brett Rann replacing Ross Baker for the hosts.
Warren Baxter performed solidly in defence for Henley as Chalfont mounted regular attacks. After 51 minutes Wasps extended their lead when a cross from Adam Davis was turned into the net from close quarters.
Henley replaced Faherty and Godwin, with Jeffrey and Fairchild, to freshen the attack but after 75 minutes Wasps again penetrated the Henley defence with Alex Feaver scoring, effectively putting the game beyond the Red Kites’ reach.
Henley rallied hard and pulled a goal back when Rann, following a good run, beat Turner with 11 minutes of normal time to play. The hosts surged forward once again and a shot from Rann went just wide while another attempt hit the underside of the bar.
An infringement in the Wasps’ penalty area provided Henley with a penalty which Graham Sims scored after 85 minutes. Hopes were raised in the Henley camp of possibly grabbing an equaliser but they had left it too late as they came away from the game pointless.
