HENLEY TOWN moved up to fifth place in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 East table thanks to a 2-1 win against Penn and Tylers Green at the Triangle Ground last Saturday, writes Graham Harris.
The Red Kites began the match by forcing two corners in the opening 10 minutes, the first deftly turned away by Barbol. Baxter and Cooper were sharp in defence for Henley, while Jordan Gumms was an impressive playmaker for the visitors.
Graham Sims opened the scoring for the Kites after 11 minutes when he picked up the ball in midfield and found space before firing his shot home through the Penn defence. Penn went on the attack and a free kick hovered dangerously in the goalmouth but was cleared to safety by Baxter. Momentum was rising in the Penn side and their efforts were rewarded in the 24th minute when a well-struck shot from Josh Fox flew past Ashley East in the Henley goal.
The Red Kites refused to let their heads drop as Penn rallied forward and a good tackle by Fairchild averted danger before East saved a powerful header from Chris Hurst.
Henley regained the lead when Adam Jeffrey moved down the left before crossing the ball to Brett Rann who hit a searing shot into the net within injury time at the end of the first half.
In the second half a chance fell for Henley when Commack came through to shoot just wide. After 15 minutes the Henley defence were stretched when Penn took five successive corners. East turned away a shot soon after before Baxter scrambled the ball away. East then made a fine instinctive save, when Tagoe-Gilbert blasted the ball at close quarters.
Soon after a free kick from Hurst, in a potentially dangerous position, sailed over the bar. Henley brought on Faherty, Sawyer and Cripps during the second half and despite a substantial amount of added time, Henley held firm to secure the points.
