TWO first-half defensive errors proved costly as Woodcote/Stoke Row tumbled out of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup at the first round
TWO first-half defensive errors proved costly as Woodcote/Stoke Row tumbled out of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup at the first round stage at home to Chinnor on Saturday.
Hellenic League Division 1 side Chinnor took the game to Woodcote in the early exchanges, but it was the home side that created the first chance after 10 minutes with Frank Dillon bringing a good save with a fierce drive from a narrow angle.
On the half hour mark a goal-line clearance by a Chinnor defender, after a Carl Smith lob over the keeper, maintained the 0-0 scoreline.
The deadlock was broken on 35 minutes when the home defence misjudged a long ball and a Chinnor attacker lobbed the ball over the advancing Roberts. Minutes later Andy Bullett’s attempted clearance cannoned off a Chinnor player straight into the path of a forward who scored with ease.
Woodcote could have reduced the arrears before the break when Frank Dillon made a run down the left and crossed to Corbett whose header went narrowly over the bar.
In a second-half with little goalmouth action the tie had all but fizzled out when Woodcote scored in the last minute. Substitute Dave Givens’ long throw was neatly headed home by another substitute, Darren Russell.
