HENLEY TOWN recorded their fifth successive win in league and cup competitions on Saturday, beating Finchampstead on the Triangle in Division 1 East of the Uhlsport Hellenic League, writes Graham Harris.

Early in the game Ashley East made a fine stop from a shot from Finchampstead forward Sean Cahill. Soon after a timely tackle from Andrew Nunn on Kylo Atkinson averted a dangerous Finchampstead attack.

Former Henley player Atkinson was a constant danger throughout the afternoon and broke through the home defence to put Finchampstead 1-0 up after 21 minutes with a well taken goal.

Seven minutes later a Graham Sims free kick found Red Kites winger Ben Clarke, who headed home from close range to equalise. The hosts then took the lead when Karl Sims ran down the left before unleashing a searing shot into the net. Soon after Matt Godwin (Henley) and Sam Green (Finchampstead) received yellow cards following a scuffle.

Three minutes before half-time Henley were awarded a penalty when Howell was brought down by keeper Neil Griffiths for which the Finchampstead keeper was shown a yellow card, for the infringement. Graham Sim’s spot kick was then pushed away by Griffiths’ outstretched hand. Fourteen minutes into the second half Sam Cripps’ cross found Godwin whose shot was well flighted into the goal to put Henley 3-1 ahead.

On the hour mark Godwin manoeuvred his way through the Finchampstead defence, finding space to coolly curl the ball into the right hand side of the net to extend the Red Kites’ lead.

The tempo of the game was raised and frantic action ensued at both ends of the pitch before Atkinson lobbed the ball over Ashley East after 75 minutes to pull a goal back for the visitors.

Dan Faherty replaced Sam Cripps, the only substitute available for the Red Kites before a late shot by Finchampstead midfielder Steve Ryan came close to finding the net.
