Dillon wraps up comfortable win

WOODCOTE/STOKE ROW ran out comfortable winners in the Reading League’s John Dell Senior Division on Saturday at Mortimer.

WOODCOTE/STOKE ROW ran out comfortable winners in the Reading League’s John Dell Senior Division on Saturday at Mortimer.

The visitors, with seven first team players unavailable, gave first league stars of the season to Ross Weatherstone and Dave Rook at centre back.

Woodcote started brightly with Ryan Corbett heading against the bar after 30 seconds. Several other chances went begging in the opening 10 minutes, most notably James Worsfold who skied his shot over with the goal at his mercy.

Ross Weatherstone also rattled the bar with a free kick and it was a set piece that finally found the breakthrough after 16 minutes when Frank Dillon’s long throw was flicked on by Worsfold and Ryan Corbett rose to nod home at the far post.

Before half time Jim Hancock, Weatherstone and Corbett all had good chances.

Mortimer posed little threat going forward and their best chances came from a series of corners they had midway through the half which came to nothing.

At the start of the second period, Mortimer came out with much more purpose, pressuring the midfield. A good performance from the visitors’ back four meant that Kane Roberts in goal had little work to do and the main action all took place at the other end.

The Mortimer bar was rattled another three times in the second half with efforts from Corbett and Worsfold, but on 73 minutes a deep corner eluded everyone except Weatherstone who guided his header into the top corner for 2-0.

On 81 minutes Dillon burst into the box and finished low past the keeper to make it 3-0. Late in the game Mortimer had a player sent off for dissent.
