WOODCOTE/STOKE ROW secured all the points from their Reading Saturday League John Dell Senior Division encounter at home to lowly Wraysbury Village.
Wraysbury failed to take advantage of some poor defending by the hosts in the first half, missing the target with several clear-cut chances, and fell behind in the 28th minute when Frank Dillon’s cross was deflected into the net for an own goal.
Woodcote’s only other chance of the half came from Ryan Corbett’s cross which saw Frank Dillon shoot tamely at the keeper and the rebound headed into the keeper’s arms by James Worsfold.
The hosts were more dominant in the second half. Almost immediately they could have added to their lead, but Weatherstone just failed to make contact with Gareth Evans’ free kick.
Player/manager Weatherstone then withdrew himself and was replaced by Dave Givens. The change was immediately beneficial as, two minutes later, Givens’ deep cross found Frank Dillon beyond the far post where he pulled the ball back for James Worsfold to score at the second attempt.
This setback stung Wraysbury into action and only a good diving save by Kane Roberts stopped them from narrowing the gap.
The game was finally wrapped up with a gift goal after 82 minutes. Substitute Chris Pilling unsettled a defender whose attempted back pass was nowhere near his keeper but presented Frank Dillon with an open goal in which to score.
The win and the second-half dominance demonstrated the importance of having a strong squad as substitutes Givens, Pilling and Darren Russell were all influential in a much more accomplished second half performance.
