FOLLOWING four successive wins, Woodcote/Stoke Row went down to a narrow defeat in the John Dell Senior Division of the Reading Saturday League away to Marlow United at their temporary ground in High Wycombe.
Marlow started the brighter with some good interplay but apart from a snap shot which Kane Roberts easily claimed they posed no real threat. At the other end Woodcote worked several openings with skipper Jim Hancock heading on to the roof of the net and Ryan Corbett stinging the hands of the keeper.
There was controversy on the half-hour mark when, twice within a minute, Woodcote appealed for penalties for what they felt were fouls on Ryan Corbett, but on both occasions the referee was unmoved.
Marlow continued to pose a threat on the counter attack but the Woodcote defence coped well and it was the home defence which seemed the busier.
After 35 minutes Corbett volleyed wide after a flick from a long throw. Woodcote got the break through on the stroke of half-time when Gareth Evans scored from a free kick. The bright sun, which had only just appeared, was directly in the eyes of the Marlow keeper. Evans fired his free kick in towards the keeper who made a hash of catching it and allowed it to bounce into the net. Seven minutes into the second half James Worsfold had a free header five yards out but proceeded to hit the keeper.
Marlow went straight down the other end and equalised after some casual defending.Undeterred by letting a goal in Woodcote continued to attack as Corbett saw a shot on goal go wide.
As the second half progressed the game became stretched with Marlow soaking up pressure and counter attacking at pace, but the visitors still looked the more likely to score. Frank Dillon was getting joy down the left wing and was only halted by some heavy tackles.
With 20 minutes remaining more poor defending allowed a Marlow midfielder an unchallenged strike from 25 yards out and he arrowed the ball into the bottom corner to put Marlow 2-1 up.
For the remaining 20 minutes Woodcote bombed ball after ball into the Marlow penalty area but with no reward. Andy Bullett saw a shot saved, Jim Hancock had a header saved while Corbett went close on several occasions.
