Wonder strike decisive for Rotherfield

FERGUS CREAN’S late goal ensured ROTHERFIELD UNITED U18s came out on top from their South Chiltern Minor League derby clash with CAVERSHAM AFC KITES U18s on Sunday.

FERGUS CREAN’S late goal ensured ROTHERFIELD UNITED U18s came out on top from their South Chiltern Minor League derby clash with CAVERSHAM AFC KITES U18s on Sunday.

Louis Walsh gave Rotherfield an early lead on three minutes with a chip over the Caversham keeper. Rotherfield were playing against a strong wind and only managed to keep their lead for five minutes when keeper Danny Hodder deflected a fierce shot from the edge of the area and the Caversham attack were first to the rebound for an easy tap-in.

Rotherfield had a penalty shout waved away by the referee on 30 minutes and Caversham had a goal disallowed for offside a few minutes later.

The wind dropped in the second half and this favoured the Rotherfield passing game. With Markland Tidswell bolstering the midfield they were able to match Caversham’s physical game and started to dominate play and frustrate the home team with Guy Brown going close to scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. Twenty minutes into the half Caversham gave away a free kick on the half way line and, with the wind picking up again, Rowan Stacey took a chance with a long ball curling to the back post where Crean slammed his volley into the top of the Caversham net.

A last minute Daniel Watts goal lifted ROTHERFIELD UNITED U12s up to second spot in Division 1 of the Berkshire Youth Development League following their 3-2 victory against PANGBOURNE U12s in a match played in blustery conditions.

Rotherfield took the lead after 25 minutes with Iwan John driving the ball through the middle of the field to pass the ball wide to Charlie Wagstaff on the right hand edge of the box who fired home. Pangbourne equalised soon after from the penalty spot.

In the second half Rotherfield continued to dominate, and piled on the shots at goal but were thwarted by the Pangbourne keeper. Six minutes from time Joe Macdonald leapt through the defenders at a corner taken by Wagstaff to slam the ball home from his head.

With Rotherfield hungry for more goals they over committed, and were caught on the break with some good movement by Pangbourne, to equalise once more.

In the final minute another corner put in by Wagstaff found the head of man-of-the-match Watts who directed the ball into the top corner of the goal for the winner.

ROTHERFIELD U12s entered two teams in the new Oxford indoor football centre for a knockout futsal tournament of teams from across the county.

There were two groups with a Rotherfield team in each. Team A were undefeated in Group A, coming out first overall while Team B, who had led their group until the final game where they lost against Chalgrove, finished runners-up.

This set up an all-Rotherfield semi-final in which the A team progressed to the final where they beat Chalgrove B. Rotherfield, who consisted of Charlie Wagstaff, Jack White, Justus Larter, Jack Cuthbertson, Rowan Prince and Max Hanshaw, dominated the final and were unfortunate not to score before Chalgrove netted the winning goal.

The B team, made up by Joe Macdonald, William Graham, Zodey Sabijan, Daniel Watts, Charlie Masters and Harry Purdey, finished fourth.

GORING ROBINS U12s moved up to fourth place in Division 2 of the Berkshire Youth Development Legaue after winning 1-0 against WOKINGHAM AND EMMBROOK U12s.

In strong winds and occasional driving rain, Wokingham started well and threatened the Robins goal more than once during the opening quarter.

In the second half, with the strong winds behind them, Robins started to change the possession into clear chances but they were all foiled until from a corner Will Graham had a low header cleared off of the line. The ball reached the edge of a crowded penalty area and Alex Jaffray was lurking in a position to thump a low shot through the crowd into the bottom left hand corner for the lead.

ROTHERFIELD MUSTANGS U11s enjoyed the best possible start to the new year with a convincing 4-0 win over WOKINGHAM AND EMMBROOK BLACKS U11s in the Berkshire Youth Development League on Saturday.

The Mustangs opened the scoring when a cross into the box from Oliver Pryce was rifled home by man-of-the-match Tommy Edwards.

In the second half solid passing from Eddie Handley and Pryce created opportunities up front with one such pass finding Ollie Deacon on the edge of the box who fired home to make it 2-0.

Moments later a strike from Edwards blocked by the keeper found Pryce who slotted in for 3-0. Handley circumnavigated Wokingham and Emmbrook’s defence for Deacon to poke in to complete the scoreline.
