HOST side Watlington Town Reserves’ growing promotion challenge came to a shuddering halt on Saturday after they went down to a 2-0 defeat against Didcot Eagles.
A run yielding seven points from nine in the first three games of January was abruptly ended as Town failed to produce the necessary performance on home soil.
Didcot took full advantage of Town’s stuttering display as they converted two chances in a game of few goal-scoring opportunities. The goals came against the run of play as Watlington tried to mount pressure and create opportunities, but the visitors’ defence held firm and they pounced on an error in the home box to put them 1-0 up midway through the first half and took one of their other rare opportunities in the second half to make it 2-0. It was not Town’s day and while they showed flashes of their old fluency, nothing they tried seemed to come off and they left the pitch empty-handed and disconsolate with their promotion bid now all but over.
