HENLEY TOWN leapfrogged Headington Amateurs in Division 1 East of the Hellenic League after running out 5-3 winners at the Triangle Ground on Tuesday.

The hosts started strongly and opened the scoring on minutes as Ben Clark volleyed home from Asa Povey’s corner.

Povey, who turned 18 on Monday, almost doubled the lead minutes later, playing a one-two with forward Louis Howell and beating two defenders and the goalkeeper before firing over the bar.

Headington had a chance to equalise before half-time when they were awarded a penalty, debutant goalkeeper Ashley East bringing down the visiting striker after Ryan Witts’ backpass. The resultant spot-kick hit the post and while the rebound was fired home by the taker, the goal was disallowed as it hadn’t been touched by another player before he took the shot.

Clark doubled the lead soon after the break, scrambling home following a cross from the right. Headington put themselves back into the game after a defensive mistake allowed the winger to score.

Povey restored the two-goal lead soon after, a fine solo run taking him past two defenders and the goalkeeper before he calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Just as Henley thought the points were safe, Headington scored again, the winger nipping in to finish a flowing move for his second goal.

Sean Moore finally put the game to bed with a curling shot into the top corner after controlling Dan Faherty’s cross, before Billy Gordon put the gloss on the scoreline with 15 minutes to go. Henley conceded a third goal from another cross but held on to secure a valuable win.

Speaking after the win, Henley coach Craig Sumner said: “At the moment we are very open, creating lots of chances and taking them but we need to stop making silly defensive errors.

“This season we have only been able to train once due to things like the weather so we are looking forward to a few more sessions and games to get into our flow and have a good 2015.”
