ROTHERFIELD UNITED U12s’ Sunday side celebrated their promotion to Division 1 of the Oxford Mail League in style at Oxford United’s Kassam Stadium on Saturday.
After an opening speech by chairman of the league ex-Chelsea player turned BBC commentator Peter Rhoades-Brown led the presentation of the trophies, each of which was handed out by Oxford United’s “AJ” George.
During the initial speeches the entire Oxford United squad were at the front of the stage, acting as role models for the young players receiving their trophies.
On Sunday ROTHERFIELD UNITED U12s went down 2-1 at home to DIDCOT CASUALS BLUE U12s in their first Division 1 clash.
Rotherfield more than held their own with 65 per cent possession and keeping Didcot well in their own half for the majority of the game.
Didcot were dangerous on the break with a fast left winger causing issues for the Rotherfield defence.
Five minutes in a Didcot player was tripped in the box and the resulting spot kick beat United keeper Max Hanshaw.
United piled on the pressure, only to be caught on the break five minutes later, the Didcot winger outpacing the Rotherfield defence, and taking a shot on the move to put the Casuals 2-0 up.
Good work in midfield from Rowan Prince and man-of-the-match Jack White resulted in United producing chances. United eventually pulled a goal back when Justus Larter was fouled in the box, giving Rotherfield a penalty converted by Jack Cuthbertson.
On Saturday ROTHERFIELD UNITED U13s went down to a 3-2 defeat away to Berkshire Youth League Division 1 second placed side ELDON CELTIC 1967 U13s.
Despite going a goal down early on, Rotherfield played a pressing, high pressure game that unsettled their opponents and prevented them adding to their early goal before half-time.
Rotherfield continued their energetic approach after half time, going close a number of times while some fine saves from goalkeeper Thomas Capaldi kept the score at 1-0.
United equalised when good battling from Kieran Lloyd allowed Ollie Sayer to fire the ball across the Eldon box. Charlie Douglas collected the ball at the back post before pulling it back for Drew Preston to slam a shot into the roof of the Eldon net.
Rotherfield burst forward again, Joseph Parkins released Sayer down the right, who beat the defender for pace and hit a shot that clipped the crossbar on the way in.
With time running out some good wing play resulted in a low cross that was converted for the equaliser by Eldon Celtic. Moments later a similar move resulted in the winner for the hosts.
l Sunday’s match was refereed by Ollie Wagstaff who recently qualified as the country’s youngest match official.
