HENLEY TOWN knocked Hellenic League Division 1 East leaders Brackley Town Development off the top of the table after holding them to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, with both goals coming in the first-half.
Earlier in the season the Red Kites became one of only two sides to have defeated the hosts.
Going into the match Henley were without Asa Povey, who had netted nine goals in his previous nine appearances, due to illness.
The hosts started brightly but the Henley defence held firm to deny them any clear-cut chances.
The Red Kites then began to attack the hosts using their wingers to good effect.
The visitors took the lead when from a Ben Clarke corner the ball fell to defender Mitchell Cooper who volleyed home.
Five minutes before the interval midfielder Ryan Witt shoulder-barged a Brackley midfielder and a free-kick was awarded. From the resulting free-kick Brackley played the ball down the wing quickly and with just one Henley player in the box, scored the equaliser.
Despite both hitting their opponents’ goalposts during the second half, neither side was able to break the stalemate.
After the game Henley Town manager Craig Sumner said: “They were a very fit side and we’re very proud of our boys as they were a lot older than the other team.
“The draw was a fair result and with Brackley being the leaders we’ve taken four points off them so we’re pretty happy with that.”
