Five goals in final match

WATLINGTON wrapped up its first season in the North Berks League by hitting five past Hanney 66.

WATLINGTON wrapped up its first season in the North Berks League by hitting five past Hanney 66.

Town took a deserved lead when Woolfson collected an Elbro pass in midfield and hit a stunning half-volley from range into the top corner of the goal.

Before long it was 2-0 as Newbold ran on to a long kick by Selwood in the Watlington goal and chipped the onrushing Hanney goalkeeper.

With more than half an hour played Newbold came from his own half to convert a through-ball from Elbro as home appeals for offside were waved away by the referee. The striker then completed an impressive first-half treble as he drove forward from the left flank before confidently finishing.

Manager Griffiths demanded more of the same after the break and Town continued to create chances and a fine Elbro volley from an outswinging corner by King made it 5-0.

The whole defence was outstanding in what was Town’s most convincing win of the season, leaving them in a comfortable mid-table position.
