WATLINGTON TOWN went down fighting in their last North Berks Division 1 match of the season
WATLINGTON TOWN went down fighting in their last North Berks Division 1 match of the season at title-chasing Berinsfield on Saturday.
Centre-back Jon Little opened the scoring early in the game as bottom club Watlington took a surprise lead following a smart glancing header from a free kick.
The hosts’ frustration grew as visiting manager Matthews’ 5-4-1 game plan appeared to be paying off, before Berinsfield equalised shortly before the break when Town failed to clear a corner and the home side forced the ball over the line.
In the second half Town played against the wind and spent most of the half encamped in their own half of the pitch as they held on for a draw in the face of wave after wave of Berinsfield attacks.
With less than 10 minutes remaining Watlington conceded a penalty but keeper Barabas pulled off a good save.
With just four minutes left on the clock Barabas produced a quadruple save before he was finally beaten at the fifth attempt.
Town pushed on for a late equaliser but were undone for a third time deep into injury time as their resistance was finally broken.
