Red Kites downed by second-half strike

HENLEY TOWN narrowly lost out in their Hellenic League Division 1 season opener at home to Wantage Town Reserves last

HENLEY TOWN narrowly lost out in their Hellenic League Division 1 season opener at home to Wantage Town Reserves last Saturday.

A warm afternoon attracted a small crowd of supporters to see the new look Red Kites in action on a flawless playing surface.

Included in the starting 11 were new signings Gary Smith and newly appointed captain Adam Bygrave from neighbours Woodley Town along with fullback Matt Belcher from Eversley and striker Richard Bennett who signed late towards the end of last season.

The game started at a high tempo with Henley applying a lot of pressure in the first half, winning several set pieces but failing to capitalise on them as the teams went into half-time goalless.

In the second half the visitors started to make an impact on the game and on the hour mark a left sided cross found Wantage captain Adam Cashin-Murray just inside the box who accurately hit a shot through a crowd of players with the inside of his foot into the top left hand corner of the Henley net.

Red Kites’ manager Craig Sumner tried to improvise shortly after with the introduction of attacking players Slade and Howell attempting to claw back the goal deficit but to no avail.

Henley Town: Fairchild, Mew, Belcher, Nunn, Smith, Clark (Howell, 83 mins), Bygrave, Povey, Witt (Slade, 73 mins), Kemp (Palmer, 87 mins), Godwin, Bennett. Subs not used: Slocombe.
