Premier side has the edge in cup tie

HENLEY TOWN crashed out of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup at the first round stage at home to Hellenic League

HENLEY TOWN crashed out of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup at the first round stage at home to Hellenic League Premier Division side Binfield on Saturday.

Henley were forced to re-shuffle for this game due to injuries within the squad.

The Red Kites started the brighter and forced Binfield on to the back foot for the opening 25 minutes with the hosts forcing several corners in the process but they were unable to convert any due to the stout defending from the visitors.

Lively Binfield winger Josh Howell drew a foul out on the left wing just before the half-hour mark and the resulting free kick saw a low cross sent in by Dean which was flicked over Fairchild in the Henley goal by Horscroft to make it 1-0.

In the second half the visitors had good spells of play trying to search for a second goal but it was Henley who got the equaliser. Louis Howell out wide beat his marker and forced his way into the box to deliver a cross to the unmarked Thomson-Wheeler who scored his first goal for the club since signing from Hayes and Yeading. The goal enabled the game to become open as both sides looked to find a winner inside 90 minutes.

The deciding goal came when Binfield were awarded a corner which was taken short to Howell who shot from the edge of the box. The shot ricocheted off a Henley defender and looped over the Red Kites defence and Dickie was able to out-jump and head the ball on to the underside of the bar on its way into the goal.

Both sides created further chances but the visitors held on to secure a place in the next round of the competition.

Henley: Fairchild, Cuthbert, Slocombe, Nunn, Smith, Povey, Godwin, Howell (Clark, 75 mins), Kemp, Bennett, Thomson-Wheeler. Sub not used: Kyratzis.
