Second-half tactical changes pay off

HENLEY TOWN maintained their Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 East promotion push with victory at Holyport last Saturday.

HENLEY TOWN maintained their Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 East promotion push with victory at Holyport last Saturday.

The Red Kites started the game brightly with in form striker Ben Clark putting the visitors ahead after 14 minutes. Good play from Grant Kemp and David Stevens unlocked the Holyport defence with some intricate passing allowing Jack Thomson-Wheeler to cut the ball back from the byline to Clark who volleyed into the top left corner.

Holyport began to get the upper hand but the Henley defence, led by captain Richard Thomas, kept them at bay until the final minutes of the first half. A controversial throw-in from Holyport outside the playing area and beyond the spectator barriers caught the Henley defence off guard and this resulted in Jonathan Malone bringing down a Holyport player in the box. Referee Manyange awarded a penalty which Rake converted for the hosts. Holyport had the better start of the second half but a change on the hour which introduced striker Richard Bennett along with the change of formation made an instant impact which saw the visitors bag two goals.

Just over the hour mark Asa Povey got on the scoresheet when Clark played a ball across the area to Bennett whose effort struck the post and Povey followed in under a strong challenge to score on the underside of the bar.

Henley never looked back as winger Kemp tested the Holyport defence on more than one occasion. Kemp was fouled just outside the box on 83 minutes and Bennett hit his free kick over the top of a five man wall and past the home keeper to make it 3-1.

Henley Town: Nunn, Tye, Goddard, Thomas, Malone, Mew, Kemp, Povey, Clark, Stevens, Thomson-Wheeler (Bennett, 60 mins).
