HENLEY TOWN FC are set to face Binfield at Reading’s Madejski Stadium on Thursday night in the final of the Reading Senior Cup.
The Red Kites secured their place in the final last Thursday thanks to a 3-2 victory against Westwood United while Binfield secured their place at Madejski Stadium after defeating Highmoor/Ibis on Saturday.
Though Henley have met Binfield many times, only one of these games has been in the Reading Senior Cup, and that was in last year’s semi-final when the Moles won 4-0 on the Invesco Perpetual Triangle. This season, Binfield, who play a division above Henley, visited the Town in September in an Hellenic League Challenge Cup game and won 2-1.
The Reading Senior Cup (originally known as the Reading Town Cup) was founded as long ago as 1897, so it is surprising that Henley have never won the trophy, even allowing for the many seasons in which they have not entered.
On the one occasion Henley have previously reached the final, in 1978-79, a strong side that had had a good season failed to do themselves justice on the day, going down 2-1 at Elm Park to Courage Athletic.
Thursday’s match kicks-off at 7pm with supporters located in the lower west stand. Admission is £5 and parking is free.
