Hayden brace ensures school completes treble

SONNING’S Blue Coat School first team fought hard to earn an historic treble as they defeated

SONNING’S Blue Coat School first team fought hard to earn an historic treble as they defeated Reading School in the Gibbs Cup final at Thatcham Town Football Club.

The victory set a new record for the Berkshire school, having also won the Thames Valley League and the Walsh U18 County Cup this season.

After weathering early pressure Blue Coat’s Luke Hayden picked up the ball, beat a defender and smashed an unstoppable shot into the far corner with his left foot from 20 yards.

Soon after Blue Coat earned a corner and from a mishit Callum Brighton shot the ball travelled through the Reading six-yard box for Sonning Common’s Rowan Stacey to poke home. The Blue Coat team started the second half on the front foot and a slight mistake in the Reading defence allowed Mike Green to feed to Hayden, who made no mistake from inside the box. Later in the game Reading School pulled a goal back but Blue Coat held on to secure the cup.
