Kites flying high after gaining promotion

HENLEY TOWN have been promoted to the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division, writes John Bailey.

The Red Kites promotion was confirmed last when a draft list of clubs to form the division next season, issued by the Football Association at the end of last week, was published.

The Mill Lane side, who finished third in Division 1 East, had previously been told not to expect the promotion which is usually kept for the top two places.

It had always been known that divisional winners Penn and Tylers Green could not be considered for promotion as they had no floodlights. Bicester Town, who finished second, requested that they remain in 1 East as they are in negotiations about a possible return to their previous home ground.

In addition, the number of teams in the Premier Division next season is being increased from 20 to 21, which is still one short of full strength. Two teams are being promoted from Division 1 West.

Henley last played in the Premier Division four years ago but, despite finishing above the relegation zone, were demoted at the end of the season on the basis their facilities at the time. Henley have since had work done to their ground.

• Henley Town will be holding their annual general meeting at their Mill Lane clubhouse on Wednesday, June 1 at 8pm. Nominations for officers and committee proposals for any rule changes should be sent to secretary Tony Kingston at kingstontony6@gmail.com by May 29.
