Shewan and Walker lead way to lift cup

THE pairing of Brian Shewan and his partner Mike Walker secured the Garnham Cup at Henley

THE pairing of Brian Shewan and his partner Mike Walker secured the Garnham Cup at Henley Golf Club last weekend.

The competition, a pairs better ball Stableford, saw Shewan and Walker take the top prize with 43 points. The pairing of Rob Leigh and Digby Rancombe were runners-up on countback with 40 points from Gordon Capel and his partner Adrian Rayner.

Four pairings were a further point behind in a competition where some pairings were unable to finish the competition because of torrential rain flooding the greens halfway through the competition.

The ladies’ section held their monthly medal in conjunction with round one of the Norton Cup, also last week, where Rachel Hall took Division 1 with a net 72 which was two points better than the newly crowned ladies’ champion Clare Dodds. Jenny Stanier claimed Division 2 with a net score of 73 which was a shot better than Caroline Archibald, whilst a score of 67 by Erica Brady took Division 3 which was four shots better than runner-up Jacquie McCourt. It was a close finish in Division 4 where the countback rule decided that Caroline Thomas pipped Ali Mitchell when both players recorded net 72s.

The Harpsden-based golf club also continued their winning form by beating Castle Royle Golf Club in a mixed team competition 4.5-3.5 on Friday of last week.
