Countback rule gives King weekend title

THERE were tight finishes in two of the three divisions of the weekend Stableford at Caversham Heath.

Gary King triumphed in Division 1, on countback from David Wise, both with 36 points. King had even halves of 18 points, including six pars and three birdies. Wise went out in 23 points, but had two nil returns coming home and doubles on the 16th and 17th holes. Third was Chris Green on countback from Mike Capaldi, both with 35 points. Green recorded 13 pars, including the last six holes while Capaldi ended double bogey, bogey.

Division 2 was more clear cut with Gareth Ford scoring eight pars and two birdies to win with 41 points. Runner-up was Simon Walker with 38 points after even halves of 19 points. Third was Duncan Peart, on countback from Anthony George, both with 37 points.

Gareth Johns won Division 3, on countback from Mark Russell and Lawrence Howard all three with 37 points. Johns had halves of 16 and 21 points, Russell had three consecutive bogeys and a double bogey to end his round while three nil returns did not help Howard who ended with three double bogeys. Christopher Searle claimed the Division 1 top prize in the midweek Stableford.

Searle recorded 43 points including nine pars and one birdie. Runner-up was Seamus Smith with 41 points and third Michael Beaumont with 39 points.



Division 2 winner was Michael Gennace with 43 points. Halves of 23 and 20 points included an eagle three on the par five fourth hole and one birdie. Runner-up was Paul Lobban with 42 points. Third was Daniel Dover with 37 points.

The ladies’ Stableford was won by Jane Weller on countback from Kathy North, both with 33 points. Third was Sarla Read with 31 points.

Division 1 of the captain’s birthday bash competition resulted in victory for Andrew Parker on countback from Anne Smith, both with 38 points.

Division 2 winner was Gareth Ford with 41 points. Second was Stuart Webb with 40 points. Javier Dieguez won Division 3, on countback from Caroline Dover, both with 40 points.

The men’s nearest the pin winners were Andy Holmes, Paul Lobban and Seamus Smith. Debbie Harris was the only ladies nearest the pin winner.
