THERE were new winners in both the men’s and ladies’ club championships held at Henley Golf Club last weekend.

In the men’s championship the format was changed this year with a monthly medal held on the Saturday with the top 24 of this competition (and equal) gross scores qualifying for the final day on Sunday.

After the first round Gordon Capel and Digby Rancombe led the competition with gross 74s which was a shot better than Dave Lawrence, Brad Young and Nick Grainger.

Dave Griffin, the 2004 champion, was a further shot back with a 76 along with Matt Hele and Colin Grimmett.

The following day Rancombe improved on his previous day’s score whilst Capel had a bad day in the office. None of the other contenders could get near to Rancombe’s aggregate score and he won the club championship with a score of seven over. Matt Hele recorded a 73 to take the runner-up spot with a score of +9 which was a shot better than Young in third place.

Chris Maxted and Guy Phillips had good rounds of 73 and 74 respectively in the second round but the damage was done for them on the previous day.

In the ladies’ championship Janet Lawson was leading after 18 holes with a gross score of 80 which was a shot better than county player Sarah Arnold. Karen Pollard and Rachel Hall were two shots back in third place with gross 83s. In the afternoon round Arnold showed consistency with a second score of 81 to take the title with a score of 22 over which was two shots better than runner-up Pollard.

Sally Woolven and Janet Lawson were in third place with a score of 27 over whilst Sarah Hillas and the defending champion Jane Atkin were two shots back in fifth place.

The centenary trophy presented to the best net score in the morning was won by Lawson with a net 69.
