Brooks pips Kassam to Allen Cup on the countback rule

The scratch team, playing away at Witney Lakes suffered a whitewash, losing 3-0 on Saturday whilst the C team fared a little better halving their match away at the Downshire.

The A/B team lost their match away at Harewood Downs, 3.5-2.5 but retained the Bad Hare Claret Jug with an aggregate score of 7-5. The mixed team, playing on Sunday, beat Oakland Park, 6.5-1.5.

On Sunday 26 members competed for the Allen Cup over 36 holes. The winner was Mark Brooks on countback from Fizz Kassam with a net 138. Third place went to Scott Arlett, posting a net 142. The Hawkins Trophy, eclectic score for the day, was won by Kevin Grant. Seamus Jeffs celebrated a hole in one at the sixth.

The Springs Golf Club held an Indian themed presentation evening on Friday where prizes were presented for the winter competitions.



More than 70 people attended the event which saw Maggie Edson pick up her fourth lady golfer of the year award while Eric King secured the men’s title.

The winner of the winter league’s gross eclectic competition was Dan Walker while Janet Franklin was the best lady. The overall winner of the league was Tom Cairns with Maggie Edson taking the ladies’ honours.

Maurice Digby and Peter Hobbs won the seniors’ pairs knock-out competition while Polly Moore took the Division 2 ladies’ winter eclectic honours with Lesley Sparrow winning Division 1.

A new Course record for an amateur was set by Dan Walker in winniing his medal last year with a gross 67.

David Stankard claimed the Division 1 top prize in the weekend Stableford at Caversham Heath.

Stankard scored 39 points to win from Deighton Sear with 37 points. Third was Andrew Parker with 36 points. Division 2 winner was Will Tate with 40 points. Runner-up was Alan Schofield on countback from Archie Smith, both with 36 points.

Paul Perry won Division 3 with 31 points ahead of Javier Dieguez with 30 points. Third was Andy Lambourne on countback from Nigel Priestley and Eric Mumm, all with 29 points.

Nathan Snell topped Division 1 of the Midweek Medal with net 70. Runner-up was Stephen Beresford with net 71 and third Darren Bonney with net 72.

Stuart Walker won Division 2, on countback from Caroline Dover, both with net 71. Third was Derek Pavlovic with net 75.
