Halford helps guide side to winning score

CAVERSHAM HEATH’S Danny Dover and Jane Weller ended their captains’ year in style with the Captains’ Farewell competition played with the dice format.

The team of Stephen Halford, Duncan Peart, Kevin Clark and Debbie Harris claimed first place with 69 gross. Runners-up were Mat Brakspear, Matt Mills, Mario Atkinson, and incoming ladies’ captain Kathy North with 70. Third were Gareth Goodall, Chris Bennett, Joe Lawrence and Daphne Barker with 71.

The nearest the line on the 18th hole prize went to Joe Lawrence and the nearest the pin prizes went to Gerry Rogers, John Downey and Carl Bache.

After the competition the captains presented a cheque for £4,675 to their chosen charity, the Reading Samaritans.

The Champions Cup — an invitation only event — was played in wet and windy conditions. Anne Smith took top spot with 74 net. Duncan Mee and Andrew Thompson were hot on her heels with Mee claiming second place on countback, both with 75 net. Smith ended with four straight pats while Mee bogeyed the 17th hole and Thompson bogeyed both the 16th and 17th holes.



Caversham Heath Ladies have retained the Bronze League trophy.

The team won all three recent matches to clinch the title. They defeated Donnington Valley with all three pairs winning — Kjersti Cannon and Kathy North 5 and 4, Jane Weller and Sarah Lau 5 and 4, Pamela Stapeley and Caroline Dover one up.

The team also defeated Newbury and Crookham away where Kjersti Cannon and Kathy North won 6 and 5, Caroline Dover and Joyce Collins lost 3 and 4, Jane Weller and Sheila Evans won 2 and 1 and beat Castle Royle at Bearwood Lakes, again with all three pairs winning — Kjersti Cannon and Kathy North two up, Jane Weller and Joyce Collins 7 and 6 and Pamela Stapeley and Caroline Dover 4 and 2.
