Stankard has the edge in weekend Stableford contest

THERE were tight finishes in all three divisions in the Weekend Stableford at Caversham Heath last week.

David Stankard triumphed in Division 1 with 38 points, holding off the challenge of runner-up Gareth Goodall with 37 points. Third was Archie Smith on countback from Matt Robertson, both with 36 points.

Stankard — two halves of 19 points — had a birdie, birdie, bogey par finished while Goodall (20 and 27 points) lost his chance with a bogey on the last after a birdie and two pars in his previous three holes. Both Smith and Robertson had halves of 20 and 16 points, but Robertson lost out on third place by ending with two bogeys.

Division 2 winner was Tom Shaw, on countback from Stuart Errington, both with 39 points. Third was Alan Schofield on countback from Mark Farrington, both with 11 points. Shaw had a birdie, birdie, bogey, bogey finish while Errington ended bogey, double bogey. Schofield ended with two pars while Farrington had a double on the last.

Nigel Eyre claimed the Division 3 honours with 39 points. Runner-up was Steve Wright on countback from Caroline Dover, both with 37 points.



Lee Kirton won Division 1 of the midweek medal with net 72. Runner-up was James Murphy with net 74 and third was Gareth Goodall on countback from Tony Gonzalez, both with net 75. Murphy lost his chance of glory with a triple bogey on the last, Goodall bogeyed the last, but took third place as Gonzalez doubled the last.

Division 2 winner was Lynne Rumbold with net 75. Kjersti Cannon was second with net 76 and third was Roger Newman with net 77. Cannon lost her chance by finishing triple bogey, double bogey, bogey, while Newman did well to recover from two triple bogeys on his front nine.

Matt Robertson won the junior masters competition with net 75. Second was Will Tate on countback from Archie Smith, both with net 81.
