Steering group chairman replaced

TOWN councillor Ian Reissmann has been ousted as chairman of the Townlands Sterring Group after 10 years.

TOWN councillor Ian Reissmann has been ousted as chairman of the Townlands Sterring Group after 10 years.

He will be replaced by Councillor David Nimmo Smith who was chosen by four votes to two at a meeting the group’s sub–committee on Tuesday.

It follows the elections on May 7 when the Conservatives took control of the town council.

No vice–chairman was appointed after Councillors Stefan Gawrysiak and Julian Brookes turned down the role while Cllr Reissmann and former vice–chairman Peter Ashby were not present.

Cllr Nimmo Smith will ask for his role to be ratified at a meeting of the whole group on Monday.

He said: “This is a community group and I think the community should have a view on who chairs it.”

He added: “I want to carry on with what Ian has been doing, which is trying to get what’s best for Henley.”

Cllr Gawrysiak, who nominated Cllr Reissmann, said: “I’m hugely disappointed that Ian has been replaced as chairman because he has put 10 years of enormous hard work into this and we are at a critical moment. Continuity is very important.

“As a point of principle, it should be the wider steering group that elects the chairman and vice–chairman and I will again be proposing Ian as chairman on Monday.”
