ORGAN donation is where an organ or tissue is given to someone needing a transplant and can save or greatly enhance the life of the recipient.

Consent for a donation must be given by a person before they die or afterwards by their family. Anyone can join the NHS donor register, regardless of age, as long as they live in the UK and are legally capable of making the decision.

Between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015, more than 3,000 organs were donated by people who had died with almost 1,000 additional organs coming from living donors.
