Growing problem...

TWO former Mayors of Henley had a spat over plans by one of them to enlarge his house.

Conservative councillor David Nimmo Smith and his wife Judith (a former South Oxfordshire district councillor) are planning two extensions at their home in St Andrew’s Road.

But when the couple’s application was being considered by the town council’s planning committee there was an objection from the public gallery by Ken Arlett, who is no longer a councillor but chairman of Henley UKIP.

Mr Arlett, who lives in Elizabeth Road, said: “I can’t understand why people want these massive houses without a garage.”

Councillor Nimmo Smith is a member of the committee so had to leave the room while his colleagues considered the matter but before he did so, he made a personal statement saying that he could get more cars off the road.

“What’s the problem?” he added.

The committee agreed that it had no strong views on the application, which will now be considered by the district council, of which Cllr Nimmo Smith is also a member as well being cabinet member for the environment at Oxfordshire County Council.
