Turning back the pages

COUNCILLOR Clifford Weaver, a member of the borough council since 1951 and one of the Henley representatives on Oxfordshire County Council, is to be nominated as Mayor of Henley at the annual meeting of the council in May. Coun Weaver, who held in the office in 1960, retired from the managership of the local branch of the Westminster Bank in 1958 and has been actively connected with League of Friends of Henley Hospitals since its inception.

The Henley and District Agricultural Association is to extend its activities this year by holding a sherry party as well as the annual show and dinner-dance. Colonel S W Green, this year’s president, and his wife have very kindly offered the use of their house, garden and swimming pool at Lane End for the party on June 3.

A football match at Peppard came to a stop when the ball became deflated. A member of the local team, Andrew Bryan, of Brinds Close, Sonning Common, volunteered to go home to fetch a football pump. He set off in his mini-van but on the way reached a speed of 50mph and was booked by an observant policeman. This tale unfolded at Henley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday when Bryan pleaded guilty speeding offence and was fined £7.
