ADVERTISING banners near the Red Lion Hotel look “shabby” and should be removed, says the clerk of Henley Town Council.
Janet Wheeler told a meeting of the council’s Christmas events and decorations sub-committee that she couldn’t remember giving permission for the signs, which are attached to railings in Hart Street.
She said: “I don’t remember giving any permission. I think it makes the town look shabby. I would prefer not to have them.”
Councillor Sarah Miller suggested the banners were removed and Councillor David Eggleton said doing so would encourage the owners to seek permission next time.
Two years ago, town councillors claimed that advertising signs were making Henley look “messy”. They were unhappy with the amount, size and placement of display signs and boards.
They said some signs were not being taken down after events had happened while others were being attached to the council’s green street furniture, such as lampposts, which is prohibited.
