Arson in meadows

Arson in meadows

VANDALS set light to a wooden barbecue stand at Marsh Meadows in Henley.

The metal-capped log, which was one of several installed by Henley Town Council in 2014, was attacked around lunchtime on Sunday.

Passer-by Kate Goodman extinguished the blaze shortly after 2pm by which time more than a third of the wood surrounding the metal had been destroyed.

The stand was surrounded by newspaper, toilet roll paper and a can of hairspray, which may have been used to start the fire.

Ms Goodman said: “It is a terrible shame. Another big shame is that it had been burning for at least an hour, probably more like two, before I found it and put it out. How many locals walked straight past?

“Someone watched me putting it out and commented: ‘what’s wrong with Henley today?’. I wonder.”

Town councillor Kellie Hinton said: “This is disgusting. Hopefully CCTV will pick up the group going to and from the site and they will be dealt with by the police.

“They must have been doing this while the rest of us were remembering our fallen heroes at the remembrance parade in town.”
