RECENTLY I featured an example of old signwriting that had been revealed with the refurbishment of a shop in Wargrave.
One of the responses from readers led me to take these pictures of some similar signs in neighbouring Twyford.
In Church Street the sharp-eyed passer-by will be able to see several examples including “Twyford Meat Stores”, “Saddlery, Leather and Hardware Stores”, “Beef & Pork Butcher” and, the most peculiar of all the faint lettering, “Twyford Reading Club & Cafe”.
Presumably this last one was a club before there was a library in the area.
Do any readers remember these businesses or have any anecdotes about them to share?
