THE Chiltern Sculpture Trail at Christmas Common, which has often featured here, is sadly no more.

However, there are new curiosities in the old beech woods close by that incorporate both new technology and traditional skills.

My picture shows a group of tree trunk sculptures called Bat And Moth and there are several other examples.

Each has a built-in loudspeaker and a winding handle with which to generate the power to hear a commentary.

The talking installations explain how they came about, often in conjunction with local schools, and encourage visitors to interpret the wildlife and to pause and listen for a while. There are different channels with poetry, songs and history. And, of course, it’s all free.
