Hidden Henley

W H SMITH, the newsagents and booksellers, used to occupy the building on the corner of Hart Street and Duke Street in Henley and Timothy Whites was on the opposite side of the road.

They then exchanged positions until Smiths moved to its current premises in Bell Street, which was then next to the Tesco supermarket.

Now the elegant building at 1-3 Duke Street is the Maison Blanc patisserie and has tables and chairs outside for people to enjoy the sights in the spring sunshine.

A recent addition is a model cockerel on the window ledge above the business but I don’t know if this has any significance other than Raymond Blanc is a French chef and, of course, the coq is the symbol of France.
