Hidden Henley

THIS engraved stone just outside the Christ Church Centre in Reading Road marks where the former Independent Chapel once stood

THIS engraved stone just outside the Christ Church Centre in Reading Road marks where the former Independent Chapel once stood and evidently covers the vaults containing the remains of people who worshipped there.

The lettering, which is difficult to read due to its age, states that many of these were descended from the Huguenots, Protestants who fled France in around 1685 when the Edict of Nantes was repealed and Catholicism became the only state-approved religion.

The stone’s placement was organised by the descendants of four families with relatives in the vaults — Beuzeville, Byles, Soundy and Unwin.
