THIS stone on the front of Harringtons hairdressers in Thames Side, Henley, indicates the building’s former use as the boathouse of Henley Rowing Club, which is now located off Wargrave Road.

The club, which was formed in 1830, started off using the boathouse of the Red Lion Hotel, which it shared with a boat-builder.

In the early 20th century Brakspear offered the club the use of its old stables along the road in New Street, where it stayed until 1986. This meant that boats had to be carried through the traffic to the river and resulted in several near-misses with cars.
