OLD post markers like this one show how the banks of the Thames are being eroded. There were several such markers on the stretch of path between the Marsh lock footbridge and where the path goes off towards Shiplake.

The top of this casting reads “Towing path 14 feet to river” and shows the date 1903, so the path was originally more than four metres wide. Most of these posts have disappeared under water and the one pictured is right on the edge of what is now the bank.
