THE high street in Wargrave has changed a lot over the last 40 years. The building in my picture was once the International Stores, a popular early supermarket, which had its name and logo in tiles set into the wall where you can now see the somewhat ill-fitting replacements.
The building now houses an estate agent and surveyor. The rest of the street used to have various traditional shops including a newsagent, greengrocer, chemist and butcher together with several pubs.
I can’t remember what the building on the corner with School Lane on the other side of the road used to be but notice that it has been renovated recently, a sign perhaps that this area may soon be bustling with trade once more.
