I AM back in Wargrave again this week and these marks left on the wall of a building at the junction of High Street and School Lane.

They are caused by the fixtures that used to hold a large mirror in place so that drivers could see traffic coming from the other direction and so only pull out when it was safe to do so. There was a matching mirror on the opposite wall.

Then, of course, there weren’t any traffic lights at the crossroads. I don’t know which system has proved better at preventing accidents — perhaps there’s a reader who can tell me.
