Hidden Henley

LAST year I featured an easily overlooked curiosity on the side of Speaker?s House in Hart Street,  Henley.

Apparently, the brick appendage is not for reinforcing the old building but one of the few remaining examples of a device intended to minimise urinating in the street.

Now I?ve found an almost identical one in Bell Street that has probably become so familiar to us that we don?t notice it.

It is said that with the proliferation of pubs in Henley years ago, these bricked-up corners were necessary to deter the aforementioned antisocial behaviour at night.

Can anyone confirm that this is true?
